Living in North Dumfries

A Scottish village on the Nith and the farm country around it

North Dumfries Township takes in the village of Ayr, on the Nith River, and the farm and forest country that wraps around the south and east of Cambridge, with the hamlets of Branchton, Clyde, Roseville and Greenfield. William Dickson named the land after his home town of Dumfries in Scotland in 1816, and Scottish settlers filled it by 1832. Ayr has homes built before 1960 around its stone-and-brick village core on Stanley and Northumberland streets, many homes from the 1990s, and new streets built since 2001, and about nine in ten homes in the countryside are single detached houses. The 2021 census counted about 3,690 homes in the township, about half of them in Ayr.

Work here

The shops and services of Ayr's village core, the township's farms, and the employers of Cambridge and Kitchener a short drive away by Highway 401.

Get around

Schools

North Dumfries is served by the Waterloo Region District School Board and the Waterloo Catholic District School Board. Ayr Public School, Cedar Creek Public School and St. Brigid Catholic School are in Ayr, and Cedar Creek offers French immersion from Grade 2. Secondary students attend Southwood Secondary School or Glenview Park Secondary School in Cambridge, and Catholic secondary students Monsignor Doyle Catholic Secondary School in Cambridge.
