Elmira: Life is sweeter in Elmira.
Elmira is the region's maple syrup capital. Its one-day spring festival is billed as the world's largest, and the town pairs Mennonite farm country with a hardworking main street of family businesses.

Home of the maple syrup festival.

One Saturday in April
Every spring the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival fills the streets with the smell of pancakes and warm syrup, sugar bush tours and local food and crafts. Alongside the pancakes there is maple taffy, a crafts and collectibles show and rides on the heritage train. More than 2,400 volunteers run the day, and all of its proceeds go back to the community, with more than $1.85 million given in grants so far.
Arthur Street
Horse-drawn buggies are a regular sight on the roads around town, and Arthur Street is lined with shops and older brick storefronts. In Gore Park, the bandstand built in 1912 still stands among the trees, and the Elmira branch library has been on Arthur Street since its Carnegie building opened in 1913.
The Woolwich Memorial Centre
The Woolwich Memorial Centre has two NHL-sized ice pads, two pools, a fitness centre and a walking track. It opened in 2009 on Snyder Avenue South, and its two rinks are the Dan Snyder Arena and the Jim McLeod Arena. The Elmira Sugar Kings, the town's junior hockey team since 1971 and four times winners of the Sutherland Cup, play their home games in the Dan Snyder Arena.

Parks and playgrounds
Kate's Place for Everyone in Gibson Park opened in 2012 as an accessible playground, designed so that everyone can play together. Volunteers built its first stage in a single day that June. Bolender Park on Church Street East has a splash pad.
Trails around town
The Lion's Ring Trail makes an 11 km loop around Elmira, mostly on hard-packed stone dust, with wood-chip side trails through the woods. At the north edge of town it meets the trailway on the old Guelph and Goderich rail line, which runs east past farm fields and woodlots to West Montrose. There the trail reaches the West Montrose Covered Bridge over the Grand River, built in 1881 and the only remaining historic covered bridge in Ontario. Just north of town, the Sandy Hills Trails loop through a red pine plantation managed by the Region of Waterloo, and near Floradale a 7 km trail circles the Woolwich Reservoir, known as Lion's Lake.
The heritage train
The Waterloo Central Railway's Heritage Hopper runs on Thursdays and Saturdays from April to October, and on Tuesdays in July and August. It stops in Elmira, the Village of St. Jacobs, the St. Jacobs Farmers' Market and Northfield ION station in Waterloo, and you can get on and off at any stop. A round trip takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes.
Elmira Country Club Estates
Elmira Country Club Estates is a community by Claysam Homes on Elmira's northwest edge, along Country Club Estates Drive and Sigluna Drive. It has single detached homes, semi-detached homes and townhomes, and walking trails run through it.

History
Edward Bristow, from Sussex, England, bought land here in 1834 and opened the first store and tavern, and the settlement was known as Bristow's Corners. In 1853 Woolwich Township council renamed it Elmira, after Elmira, New York. The railways arrived late in the 1800s and brought furniture making and other industries, and Elmira became a town in 1923. The first maple syrup festival was held in 1965, and in 2000 Guinness World Records named it the largest single-day maple syrup festival in the world.
The homes
The 2021 census counted about 4,100 homes in Elmira. About two in three are single detached houses, about one in eight are semi-detached and about one in eight are in apartment buildings under five storeys. Row houses make up about one in sixteen. About one in four homes were built in 1960 or earlier and about a third between 1961 and 1980. About a third were built in 2001 or later.

Arthur Street (Regional Road 85) runs south through St. Jacobs to Waterloo, and Uptown Waterloo is about 15 km away in a straight line. Grand River Transit's 21 Elmira route runs through St. Jacobs to Conestoga station in north Waterloo, which connects with ION light rail.
