Living in Centre Wellington
Two stone towns on the Grand and the farm country around them
Centre Wellington Township takes in Fergus and Elora, with Salem, and the farm country, hamlets and river valleys around them, from Belwood Lake in the east to Inverhaugh in the west. Fergus is the largest town, with a limestone downtown on the Grand River, and Elora stands on the edge of the Elora Gorge, five kilometres downstream. Housing runs from stone houses of the 1800s in both downtowns to streets built since 2001, which hold about a third of the homes in the two towns. The 2021 census counted about 12,700 homes in the township, about three in four of them single detached houses.
Work here
Groves Memorial Community Hospital in Fergus, manufacturers in Fergus and Elora, the shops, restaurants and inns of both downtowns, visitors to the Elora Gorge and the Elora Mill, and the farms across the township.
Get around
Highway 6 from Guelph through Fergus toward Arthur, Wellington Road 7 from Elora to Guelph, Wellington Road 18 between Fergus and Elora, Guelph about 22 km away, and the Elora Cataract Trailway and the Trestle Bridge Trail linking the two towns.
Weekends
The Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games each August, tubing and hiking in the Elora Gorge, swimming at the Elora Quarry, boating on Belwood Lake, the Elora Festival in July, the farmers' market in Bissell Park, and the pools and rinks of the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.
Schools
Centre Wellington is served by the Upper Grand District School Board and the Wellington Catholic District School Board. Public elementary schools are in Fergus, Elora, Salem and Ponsonby, and Centre Wellington District High School in Fergus is the township's secondary school. French immersion starts in JK at James McQueen Public School and continues at J.D. Hogarth Public School and Centre Wellington District High School. St. Joseph in Fergus and St. Mary in Elora are the Catholic elementary schools, and Catholic secondary students attend St. James or Our Lady of Lourdes in Guelph.
