Living in Guelph

The Royal City, where the Speed and the Eramosa meet

Guelph was founded in 1827 by John Galt, whose streets fan out from the Speed River, and its downtown is built of local limestone beneath the twin towers of the Basilica of Our Lady. The Speed and Eramosa rivers meet in the city, and trails reach nearly every corner. Housing runs from homes built before 1960 around Downtown, Exhibition Park, St. George's Park and The Ward, to 1960s and 1970s streets in Waverley, Onward Willow and Old University, 1980s and 1990s neighbourhoods in Hanlon Creek, Parkwood Gardens and Kortright Hills, and newer homes in Westminster Woods, Grange Hill East and Hales Barton, with Clair-Maltby planned next.

Work here

The University of Guelph and its Ontario Veterinary College, Linamar and advanced manufacturing, the agri-food and biotech sector, Guelph General Hospital and Conestoga College's Guelph campus.

Get around

Guelph Central Station downtown, with GO trains to Toronto on the Kitchener line, VIA Rail and GO buses, Guelph Transit routes across the city, and the Hanlon Expressway south to Highway 401.

Weekends

The Guelph Farmers' Market and the River Run Centre downtown, Riverside Park on the Speed River, the University of Guelph Arboretum, McCrae House, Exhibition Park, and trails along the Speed and Eramosa rivers.

Schools

Guelph is served by the Upper Grand District School Board and the Wellington Catholic District School Board, which run the city's elementary and secondary schools. French immersion at the public board starts in Junior Kindergarten, and Sacred Heart Catholic School offers the International Baccalaureate program. Viamonde runs French-language public schools. The University of Guelph and Conestoga College's Guelph campus are also in the city.
