Elora: The village at the edge of the gorge.

Often called one of Ontario's most beautiful villages, Elora perches on the edge of a dramatic limestone gorge where the Grand River runs. Artists' studios, the grand old Elora Mill, summer afternoons at the quarry: this is a village people fall for on the first visit.

The Elora Mill and the gorge in autumn colour

The Elora Mill

The five-storey stone mill by the falls was built in 1832 and over the years housed a sawmill, a distillery and a flour mill. After a restoration, it reopened in July 2018 as the Elora Mill Hotel and Spa, and in 2020 it received a Heritage Recognition Award from Heritage Centre Wellington.

The Elora Festival

Each July the Elora Festival brings two weeks of concerts to the village. It is one of the township's most popular events of the year.

Art and film

The Elora Centre for the Arts opened in 2001 in a century-old school building, where the educator David Boyle was once headmaster. The Gorge Cinema is Canada's oldest continuously running repertory cinema.

The village, the gorge and Salem.

Elora's older streets sit where Irvine Creek meets the Grand River, with the gorge to the west and Salem to the north-west.

Mill Street

Elora's first commercial area grew up by the grist mill and the falls on Mill Street. Its 19th-century limestone buildings now hold shops, pubs, cafés, restaurants and art galleries, and the Jack R. MacDonald pedestrian bridge, opened in 2019, leads into the core.

Along the gorge

Elora's Upper Gorge Trailway follows tree-lined streets and cliff-tops along the gorge, past views, small beaches and historic ruins, all close to the village. The David Street bridge over Irvine Creek was rebuilt in 2004 on its stone pier of 1867.

Salem

Salem sits at the north-west edge of Elora on Irvine Creek and has grown together with the village. It has its own public school, and Veterans Park beside the creek has a picnic shelter, a playground and the war memorial.

The Elora Gorge

At the west edge of the village, the Grand River rushes past cliffs 22 metres high in the Elora Gorge Conservation Area. Riverside trails and lookouts look down on kayakers and tubers in the rapids, and the conservation area has 450 campsites, open from May 1 to October 15.

The quarry

The Elora Quarry is a two-acre former limestone quarry encircled by cliffs up to 12 metres high, with shade trees and places to picnic. It is open for swimming from mid-June to Labour Day, in two four-hour sessions a day, with tickets bought online in advance.

Bissell Park

Bissell Park, at Mill and Princess streets along the Grand River, looks over a pedestrian bridge and a waterfall. It has a pavilion, a river boardwalk and a multi-use pad that becomes an outdoor rink in winter, and it holds a weekly farmers' market in season and the village's Canada Day celebrations.

Trails to Fergus

The Elora Cataract Trailway starts in Elora and runs east through Fergus toward Belwood Lake, and the Trestle Bridge Trail links the two towns. The Cottontail Road Trail, part of the Trans Canada Trail, runs 12.6 km from just outside Elora to the Goderich to Guelph Rail Trail, and the Bissell Park Loop makes a 1.8 km walk by the river.

History

Captain William Gilkison, from Ayrshire in Scotland, bought 14,000 acres on the Grand River and founded Elora in 1832. He named it after his brother's ship, which was named for the Ellora Caves in India. The stone mill by the falls dates from 1832, and by the 1860s Elora was a busy farm market town with mills, distilleries and furniture factories. Elora was incorporated as a village in 1858 and became part of Centre Wellington in 1999.

The homes

The 2021 census counts Elora, Salem and Fergus together as one urban area, so these figures cover all three. It counted about 9,400 homes. About two in three are single detached houses and about one in six are in apartment buildings under five storeys. Row houses and semi-detached houses together make up about one in seven. About one in five homes were built in 1960 or earlier and about one in five between 1961 and 1980. About a quarter were built between 1981 and 2000, and about a third in 2001 or later. In Elora, limestone buildings of the 1800s stand on the older streets near the river, and newer streets have grown on the edges of the village, including those around Elora Meadows Park on Marr Drive.

Getting around

Wellington Road 7 runs south-east from Elora to Highway 6 and Guelph, and Guelph City Hall is about 22 km away by road, a drive of about 24 minutes. Uptown Waterloo is about 31 km away by Wellington Road 21 and Regional Road 23, and Fergus is about 5 km east by Wellington Road 18. The Metcalfe Street bridge, rebuilt with wider sidewalks and bike lanes, reopened in 2020.

Parks and daily life

The Jefferson Elora Community Centre at 29 David Street West has an arena and a hall, and the park beside it has two ball diamonds, a basketball court, a skate park and a playground. O'Brien Park, at Clyde and Water streets, is being rebuilt with a new splash pad, playground and washroom building. South Ridge Park has an accessible playground and soccer fields, Elora Meadows Park on Marr Drive has a playground and sports fields, and Foote Park has a toboggan hill. The Elora branch of the Wellington County Library is at 144 Geddes Street.
