Harriston, Palmerston, Clifford and the farm country between them
The Town of Minto brings together Harriston, Palmerston and Clifford, with farm country and the hamlets of Teviotdale and Drew around them. Harriston sits at the headwaters of the Maitland River, Palmerston grew up as a railway town around its station of 1871, and Clifford is a village on Highway 9 in the north-west. Housing runs from older homes, which make up half of Harriston's, to newer streets in Palmerston and Clifford, where about one in five homes were built in 2001 or later. The 2021 census counted about 3,890 homes in the town, about four in five of them single detached houses.
Work here
The shops and businesses on the main streets of Harriston, Palmerston and Clifford, Norwell District Secondary School in Palmerston, the farms across the town, and the employers of Listowel, about 15 to 25 minutes away.
Get around
Highway 9 through Clifford and Harriston, Highway 89 east to Mount Forest, Highway 23 south through Palmerston to Listowel, and the White's Junction Trail between Palmerston and Harriston. Guelph is about an hour away by road.
Weekends
The 1912 rail footbridge and the pool and splash pad in Palmerston's Heritage Park, a show at the Norgan Theatre, the Harriston Greenway Trail along the Maitland, the Crown Harriston and the Town Hall Theatre, the Harriston farmers' market in summer and the Harriston-Minto Fall Fair in September.
Schools
Minto is served by the Upper Grand District School Board and the Wellington Catholic District School Board. Palmerston Public School and Minto-Clifford Public School are the public elementary schools, both JK to Grade 8, with French immersion at Palmerston, and Norwell District Secondary School in Palmerston is the public secondary school, with French immersion. St. Mary Catholic School in Mount Forest and St. John Catholic School in Arthur are the Catholic elementary schools, and St. James Catholic High School in Guelph is their secondary school.
