What it's like
Rural Minto is the farm country of the Town of Minto, about 29,250 hectares of fields, woodlots and creek valleys around Harriston, Palmerston and Clifford. Concession roads run in long straight lines past farmsteads, barns and rows of tall trees. The Maitland River rises near Harriston, and Coon Creek runs from Clifford toward the Saugeen. The hamlets of Teviotdale and Drew sit at quiet crossroads. The White's Junction Trail, on a former railway line, crosses the countryside between Palmerston and Harriston, past the old junction at White's Road.
History
The first settlers arrived in the 1840s, and the Crown opened the land for sale in 1854. The railways of the 1870s made Harriston and Palmerston the market towns of the township, with a rail junction at White's Road that is now the White's Junction Trail. In 1999 Minto Township joined Harriston, Palmerston and Clifford as the Town of Minto.
The homes
The 2021 census counted about 3,890 homes in the Town of Minto. Leaving out Harriston, Palmerston and Clifford, the countryside and its hamlets had about 1,540 homes. About nine in ten are single detached houses. About four in ten were built in 1960 or earlier and about one in eight between 1961 and 1980. About one in five were built between 1981 and 2000, and more than a quarter in 2001 or later.
