What it's like

Wellesley's countryside is a wide, rolling land of farm fields, woodlots, red barns and long gravel side roads. Horse-drawn buggies travel the roads beside cars, and farm stands at the end of lanes sell eggs, maple syrup and vegetables in season. In the east, the Conestogo River winds past Hawkesville through sugar maple woods, and anglers fish its banks for pike, perch and rainbow trout. Small hamlets such as Wallenstein, Bamberg, Kingwood and Dorking keep their churches, general stores and schoolhouses at quiet crossroads. In autumn the hardwood bush turns red and gold across the whole township.

History

The township was part of the Queen's Bush and was held as Clergy Reserves until William Walker surveyed it in 1842 and 1843. Black settlers had already cleared land around today's Hawkesville and Wallenstein, and Lawson Line and Posey Line are named for Black pioneer families. John Hawke built mills at Hawkesville and became the township's first reeve. An Amish Mennonite congregation began meeting in homes in 1859, and Old Order Amish families still worship in homes today.

The homes

The 2021 census figures for Wellesley Township, less those for its villages, leave about 1,330 homes in the countryside. About four in five are single detached houses, and most of the rest are semi-detached. About two in five were built in 1960 or earlier, and about one in five between 1961 and 1980. About a quarter were built between 1981 and 2000, and about one in five since 2001. Paradise Lake has larger homes around a private lake.

Getting around

Regional roads cross the township in a grid. Nafziger Road (Regional Road 5) runs north to south through Wellesley Village, Lobsinger Line runs east through St. Clements to Waterloo, and Ament Line and Hawkesville Road (Regional Road 17) run from Linwood to Highway 85. Uptown Waterloo is about 15 to 35 km away, depending on the farm. Highway 401 is reached through Kitchener. The Kissing Bridge Trailway crosses the north of the township on the former Guelph-to-Goderich railway line. Grand River Transit does not yet serve the township. The Region has consulted on on-demand service zones for the rural areas.

Parks and daily life

The Hawkesville Playground, at 3521 Broadway Street, has a play centre, a sports pad and horseshoe pits. Wallenstein has a general store that is still open. The villages of Wellesley, St. Clements and Linwood each have a library branch, and Wellesley and St. Clements each have an arena. The Conestogo River at Hawkesville is known for fishing and bird-watching. Hawkesville is known for its custom furniture makers.
