Mount Forest, Arthur and the farm country along Highway 6
The Township of Wellington North takes in the town of Mount Forest and the village of Arthur, with farm country, Luther Marsh and the hamlets of Damascus, Kenilworth, Riverstown and Conn around them. Mount Forest sits about 430 metres above sea level near the headwaters of the South Saugeen River, and Arthur sits on the Conestogo River about 24 km to the south, both on Highway 6. Housing runs from homes built before 1961 around the two main streets to apartments, row houses and newer streets in both towns, where about one in five homes were built in 2001 or later. The 2021 census counted about 4,990 homes in the township, about three in four of them single detached houses.
Work here
The shops and businesses of Mount Forest and Arthur, the Louise Marshall Hospital in Mount Forest, the farms across the township, and the employers of Fergus, Guelph and Orangeville, about 20 to 55 minutes away by road.
Get around
Highway 6 from Guelph and Fergus through Arthur and Mount Forest toward Owen Sound, Highway 89 west to Harriston and east toward Shelburne, Wellington Road 109 from Arthur toward Orangeville, and the West Luther Rail Trail.
Weekends
The Mount Forest Fireworks Festival in July, the Arthur Fall Fair, birding and trails at Luther Marsh, the Arthur River Trail along the Conestogo, the pools and splash pads in both towns, and Junior C hockey with the Mount Forest Patriots.
Schools
Wellington North is served by the Upper Grand District School Board and the Wellington Catholic District School Board. Victoria Cross Public School in Mount Forest, Arthur Public School and Kenilworth Public School are the public elementary schools, and Wellington Heights Secondary School in Mount Forest is the public secondary school. French immersion students go to Palmerston Public School and Norwell District Secondary School in Palmerston. St. Mary Catholic School in Mount Forest and St. John Catholic School in Arthur are the Catholic elementary schools, and St. James Catholic High School in Guelph is their secondary school.
