What it's like
Maryhill sits on a rise above Hopewell Creek, and the spire of St. Boniface Roman Catholic Church, built in 1877 and 1878, can be seen from the roads around it. Beside the church are the old school of 1896 and a cemetery with iron crosses, and a wayside cross stands on St. Charles Street East. The Maryhill Inn has stood since 1852. The St. Boniface Maryhill Historical Society keeps the village's history in the Edward Halter House, built around 1850. Quiet country lanes lead out of the village into farmland on every side. In winter the outdoor rinks at Maryhill Heritage Park light up for skaters, and in summer the ball diamond and picnic area fill with games and gatherings.
History
German-speaking Catholic settlers from Alsace and Baden arrived from the late 1820s, and the settlement was first called Rotenburg and later New Germany. Its school of 1832 also served as the first Catholic church in the region, and St. Boniface parish was founded in 1834. The present church was built in 1877 and 1878. In 1941 the village took the name Maryhill: "Mary" for its Catholic faith and "hill" for the hill in the village.
