What it's like
Moorefield is a small village in the farm country of west Mapleton, along Wellington Road 10 and McGivern Street. Moorefield Ball Park on Ball Avenue has two ball diamonds, two tennis courts and two playgrounds, and its 5 km walking trail winds through a stretch of forest beside the diamonds. In winter the outdoor rink at the Moorefield Optimist Hall opens for skating. Fields of corn, grain and hay reach the edge of the village on every side, and Drayton's theatre, arena and shops are about 8 km east.
History
Moorefield takes its name from Richard C. Moore, the son of a Baptist missionary. The Moore family came to the new township of Maryborough in the 1850s and built the church around which the village grew; the earliest property deed for St. John's Anglican Church is dated July 23, 1859. In 1999 Maryborough Township became part of the Township of Mapleton.
The homes
The 2021 census does not count Moorefield on its own. It is counted with the rest of Mapleton outside Drayton, which had about 2,830 homes. About nine in ten of those homes are single detached houses. About a third were built in 1960 or earlier and about one in five between 1961 and 1980. More than a quarter were built between 1981 and 2000, and about one in five in 2001 or later.
Getting around
Wellington Road 10 runs through the village, and Wellington Road 8 leads east to Drayton, about 8 km away, a drive of about 7 minutes. Uptown Waterloo is about 53 km by road, a drive of about 42 minutes. Palmerston is a short drive north.
Parks and daily life
Moorefield Ball Park at 15 Ball Avenue has two ball diamonds, two tennis courts, two playgrounds and swing sets, washrooms and a 5 km mulch walking trail. The Moorefield Optimist Hall across the street has an outdoor rink in winter. The nearest library branch, arena and shops are in Drayton, about 8 km east.
