What it's like

Rural Mapleton covers almost all of the township: about 53,500 hectares of farm fields, woodlots and river valleys in the upper Conestogo watershed. Long concession roads cross the countryside past large barns, silos and tidy farmsteads. Conestogo Lake, a reservoir of about 628 hectares with a conservation area, lies near Glen Allan and Hollen, and anglers fish it for walleye, perch and smallmouth bass. The hamlets of Rothsay, Glen Allan, Hollen, Lebanon, Yatton and Wallenstein sit at quiet crossroads, and Glen Allan and Rothsay each have a park with a playground. In summer the fields of corn, grain and hay reach to the woodlots on every side.

History

The countryside was once two townships, Peel in the east and Maryborough in the west, settled from the 1840s, with villages such as Alma growing up along the Elora Saugeen Road. The Conestogo Dam, which formed Conestogo Lake, opened in October 1958. In 1999 the two townships and the village of Drayton joined as the Township of Mapleton.

The homes

The 2021 census counted about 3,630 homes in Mapleton. Leaving out Drayton, the countryside, Moorefield, Alma and the hamlets had about 2,830 homes. About nine in ten are single detached houses. About a third were built in 1960 or earlier and about one in five between 1961 and 1980. More than a quarter were built between 1981 and 2000, and about one in five in 2001 or later.

Getting around

Wellington roads cross the countryside in a grid. Wellington Road 8 runs east and west through Moorefield and Drayton, Wellington Road 7 leads south-east toward Elora and Guelph, and Wellington Road 17 runs through Alma toward Highway 6 and Fergus. Wallenstein and Yatton, in the south, are a short drive from Elmira and the Waterloo Region line. Uptown Waterloo is about 40 minutes by road from Drayton and Moorefield, and closer from the south of the township.

Parks and daily life

Conestogo Lake Conservation Area, run by the Grand River Conservation Authority, has a campground, fishing and snowmobile trails in winter. Glen Allan Park on Sideroad 17 has a playground, a picnic shelter and a tennis court, and Rothsay Optimist Park on Head Street has a playground and a basketball hoop. Wallace Cummings Park in Alma and the Moorefield Ball Park have walking trails. The township's library branch, arena and shops are in Drayton.
