What it's like
Wilmot's countryside is a gentle land of farm fields, woodlots and wide sky, crossed by the Nith River and its tributaries. East of Baden, the Baden Hills rise above the fields, sand hills left behind by the retreating ice about 14,000 years ago. Along the Nith, old steel truss bridges from 1910 to 1953 carry country roads across the valley. Horse-drawn buggies share the roads with cars, and farm stands at the ends of lanes sell produce in season. Hamlets such as Haysville, Philipsburg, Wilmot Centre and Luxemburg keep their churches and old crossroads.
West of town along Erbs Road, Foxboro is Baden's own countryside retreat: the Foxboro Green adult-lifestyle community wrapped around the fairways of Foxwood Golf and Country Club. Bungalow living, morning tee times, and a social calendar that does the planning for you, ten minutes from everything in town. For 55-plus buyers it's less an address than a membership.
History
An Iroquoian village of up to 600 people stood here around 1400 to 1450, and one of its longhouses is the largest known in North America. In 1822 Christian Nafziger, an Amish Mennonite, arranged land for about seventy families, and Mennonites and Amish began clearing farms after the 1824 survey. In 1828 the Huron Road opened through the south of the township, from Guelph to Goderich. The first township council met at Wilmot Centre in 1850.
The homes
The 2021 census figures for Wilmot Township, less those for its towns and villages, leave about 1,540 homes in the countryside. More than nine in ten are single detached houses. About two in five were built in 1960 or earlier, and about a quarter between 1961 and 1980. About a quarter were built between 1981 and 2000, and about one in eight since 2001. Foxboro Green, beside Foxwood Golf Club, is a community of bungalows on Foxboro Drive.
Getting around
Highway 7/8 crosses the township from east to west, south of the towns, and leads east to Kitchener's Conestoga Parkway and on to Highway 401. Kitchener City Hall is about 15 to 35 km away, depending on the farm. Grand River Transit's Route 77 stops in New Hamburg, Baden and Petersburg. The Region has consulted on an on-demand service zone for north Wilmot. A 24 km section of the Avon Trail, a hiking trail from St. Marys to Conestogo, runs through the township, and the Petersburg Regional Forest has about 30 km of trails.
Parks and daily life
Haysville Community Park, at 3433 Huron Road, has a tot playground, a scrub diamond and picnic tables. The Baden Hills Trail, at 2733 Sandhills Road, climbs to the top of one of the Baden Hills. The Petersburg Regional Forest and the Petersburg Crown Lands have trails for hiking, mountain biking and cross-country skiing. Foxwood Golf Club is west of Baden. The Wilmot Recreation Complex, on Nafziger Road between Baden and New Hamburg, has pools and ice rinks. The towns' library branches are in Baden, New Hamburg and New Dundee.
