What it's like
A Wilmot Township crossroads with deep German farming roots: country properties and open skies, just past Kitchener's edge. Mannheim sits on gently rolling land where city streets give way to farm fields. Its homes stand on large, well-treed lots along winding crescents, with wide lawns. St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church, built in 1873, and its cemetery keep the village's oldest corner. At the community park on Mannheim Road, the ball diamond and soccer field fill on summer evenings, and the outdoor rink comes out in winter. The shops of south-west Kitchener are only a few minutes away.
History
Settled in the 1840s, Mannheim is believed to be named after Mannheim in Germany. St. James Lutheran Church dates from 1873, and new homes on large lots followed in the 1980s and 1990s.
The homes
The 2021 census counted about 330 homes in Mannheim. Almost all are single detached houses. About three in four were built between 1981 and 2005. About one in seven were built between 1961 and 1980, and fewer than one in ten in 1960 or earlier.
Getting around
Mannheim is about 15 km by road from Kitchener City Hall, a drive of about 15 minutes, by the Conestoga Parkway. Highway 401 at Homer Watson Boulevard is about 14 km away, by Huron Road and Homer Watson Boulevard. Trussler Road runs along the village's east side, at the Kitchener boundary. Grand River Transit's Route 77 can be taken from Petersburg, a few minutes north.
Parks and daily life
Mannheim Community Park, at 1467 Mannheim Road, has a softball diamond, a soccer field, horseshoe pits, a picnic shelter, a playground and an outdoor rink in winter. Anna Tuerr Park, on Milne Drive, has seating, open space and walking paths. The Region of Waterloo Library's New Dundee and Baden branches are each a short drive away, and the shops and services of south-west Kitchener are a few minutes east.
