What it's like

Erin Village sits along the Credit River, with Main Street running through the middle of the village past older brick storefronts and heritage buildings. The Mill History walking trails and the Downtown Erin Heritage Walking Trail lead past the old mill sites that gave the village its start. McMillan Park on Main Street has a pavilion, lit pathways and benches, and the Erin Rotary Riverwalk Trail follows the river through Riverside Park. Every Thanksgiving weekend the Erin Fall Fair, first held in 1850, fills the fairgrounds, and the Elora Cataract Trailway leads out of the village toward Hillsburgh past farm fields and woodlots.

History

Surveyors named the township Erin in 1819 and 1820, after the poetic name for Ireland. Mills were built on the Credit River between 1826 and 1829, and the settlement was first known as McMillan's Mills, then Erinsville, later shortened to Erin. The Credit Valley Railway reached the village in 1879, the year it was incorporated. In 1997 the village and Erin Township joined as the Town of Erin.
