What it's like
Monkton is a village where County Roads 55 and 23 meet, west of Milverton and south-west of Listowel. Most of the village is in North Perth and its southern edge is in West Perth, and this page covers the whole village. The Elma Logan Recreation Complex on Nelson Street has the arena, a community hall and the Monkton branch of the North Perth Public Library, and Elma Logan Park beside it has a playground, a ball diamond and a pavilion. The G2G Rail Trail, the Perth Harvest Pathway, passes through the village. Monkton is also home to the Monkton Wildcats senior hockey club.
History
Monkton grew up along the Logan gravel road. In 1857 the contractor T. M. Daly put up the first building, a blacksmith shop on what is now Maddison Street East, and once the road was finished a stage route carried passengers and mail between Mitchell and Newry. A sawmill, a planing mill, a shingle mill, a match factory and a tannery followed, and around 1878 William Machan ran the sawmill as West Monckton Mills. The village grew on both sides of the line between Elma and Logan townships, which is why it is shared today by North Perth and West Perth.
The homes
The census counts Monkton with the farms around it, so these figures are estimates for the village, both sides of the township line included. They come to about 190 homes, more than nine in ten of them single detached houses. Nearly half were built in 1960 or earlier and about one in five between 1961 and 1980. About one in seven were built between 1981 and 2000, and about one in eight in 2001 or later.
Getting around
County Road 23 runs north from Monkton toward Listowel, about 20 km away by road, a drive of about 17 minutes. Stratford City Hall is about 36 km away by road, a drive of about 29 minutes. PC Connect's Route A stops in Monkton, Monday to Saturday. The G2G Rail Trail runs through the village.
