The Festival City, on the Avon River
A railway town dreamed big and the world showed up: the Stratford Festival is billed as North America's largest classical repertory theatre, and the city around it matches the performance, swans on the Avon, Victorian streets of inns and gardens, and a food scene fed straight from Perth County farms. Culture, heritage, and small-city warmth, all in one place. Stratford grew from Little Thames, a market centre settled in 1832 and named, like its river, after Stratford-upon-Avon in England. The railway arrived in the 1850s, Stratford became a town in 1859 and a city in 1886, and the Festival's first season opened on July 13, 1953. Housing runs from homes built before 1961 in the Downtown Core, Romeo Ward and Shakespeare Ward, through a mix of older and 1960s and 1970s streets in Avon, Falstaff and Hamlet wards and 1980s and 1990s streets in John Street South, to newer homes in Romeo Street North, Avon West and Coventry.
Work here
The Stratford Festival and the visitors it brings, manufacturing in the Wright Business Park and the city's south-end and east-side industrial lands, Stratford General Hospital, the University of Waterloo Stratford School and the Stratford Chefs School.
Get around
VIA Rail trains to Toronto and to London and Sarnia from Stratford station, GO trains on the Kitchener line, seven Stratford Transit routes from the terminal at 290 Downie Street, PC Connect intercity buses, and Highways 7 and 8 through the city.
Weekends
The Stratford Festival's four stages, the Stratford Chefs School's public dinners from October to March, the Chocolate Trail, the swans on the Avon River, the Shakespearean Gardens below the Huron Street bridge, and the riverside parks around the Festival Theatre.
Schools
Stratford is served by the Avon Maitland District School Board and the Huron-Perth Catholic District School Board. Public elementary schools run to Grade 6, Stratford Intermediate School takes Grades 7 and 8, and Stratford District Secondary School takes Grades 9 to 12; a few edge streets go to Downie Central or Central Perth, which run JK to Grade 8. Public French immersion starts in Grade 1 at Anne Hathaway or Bedford. The Catholic board runs JK to Grade 8 schools, Jeanne Sauvé Catholic School for French immersion from Junior Kindergarten, and St. Michael Catholic Secondary School. The University of Waterloo Stratford School and the Stratford Chefs School are in the city too.
“I worked with Dave Maund – RE/MAX REALTOR to sell my home, and the experience was exceptional from start to finish. Dave and his team went above and beyond on many occasions. From the very beginning, Dave demonstrated a deep understanding of today’s market and provided a thoughtful, accurate evaluation of my home. Throughout the process, he was always available — answering questions at all hours and even supporting me through a few panic moments with my new home purchase (despite not being my buying agent!). His professionalism and genuine care truly stood out. A big shoutout as well to Vera and the photographer for beautifully staging and showcasing my home, and to Charlene, the Transaction Manager, who was lovely to work with and incredibly efficient. I can’t recommend this team enough — knowledgeable, responsive, and truly invested in their clients’ success. If I could give 10+ stars, I would!”
A calm hand in a big decision.
