Millbank

Mennonite farm country at its sweetest: Millbank is the kind of crossroads where the general store still matters, buggies share the road, and the famous local bakery is worth the drive all by itself. Anna Mae's Bakery & Restaurant began in 1978 as a pie stand at the end of Anna Mae Wagler's driveway and has been a bakery and restaurant since 1991, baking more than 75,000 pies a year and drawing visitors from across Ontario. Lyle Yost Memorial Park has two lit ball diamonds, a pavilion and a playground, and Pioneer Park on Waterloo Street has a playground. The Millbank Arts and Heritage Society meets in a former church on Church Street that seats up to 100.

Settlers from Northern Ireland founded Millbank in 1848. They cleared the forest for farms and built the township's first sawmill and grist mill beside the river, and the mill gave the village its name. When Mornington Township held its first council meeting in 1854, it met at William Houston's tavern in Millbank. Millbank became part of Perth East in 1998.

The census counts Millbank with the farms around it, so these figures are estimates for the village. They come to about 190 homes, about nine in ten of them single detached houses. About half were built in 1960 or earlier and about one in five between 1961 and 1980. About one in five were built between 1981 and 2000, and about one in eleven in 2001 or later.

Perth Road 121 runs through Millbank, and Perth Road 119 runs south to Stratford. Stratford City Hall is about 27 km away by road, a drive of about 24 minutes, and Kitchener City Hall about 38 km, a drive of about 34 minutes. Milverton, with the township's arena and pool, is a short drive west.

Lyle Yost Memorial Park at 4001 Perth Line 72 has two ball diamonds with updated lights, a concession booth, a pavilion and a playground. Morningdale Centennial Park at 4141 Line 73 is a large open park with an enclosed pavilion, a small kitchen and washrooms. Pioneer Park at 4079 Waterloo Street has a playground. The Millbank Arts and Heritage Society hall at 6988 Church Street seats up to 100 and has a kitchen and sound system. Anna Mae's Bakery & Restaurant is known for its broasted chicken and made-from-scratch pies.
