Milverton

Buggy country: Milverton's rolling Amish-Mennonite farmland and tidy main street offer some of the most peaceful country living anywhere in our service area. The largest Amish settlement in Canada is in the Milverton area. Milverton is the largest community in Perth East and home to the township office, on Mill Street East. The Perth East Recreation Complex on Temperance Street has the township's only arena, a banquet hall and an outdoor pool, with a park, a walking trail and the All Wheels Park beside it. Milverton Lions Square on Main Street North has a fountain, benches and a gazebo, and the Milverton Fair is held each September.

Andrew West, a shoemaker, settled at what is now William and Church streets in 1848 and opened a hotel a year later, and the settlement became known as West's Corner. In 1871 the Rev. P. Musgrove suggested the name Milverton, after Milverton in Somerset, England, and a grist mill was built the same year. The Stratford and Huron Railway arrived in 1877, Milverton became a village on January 1, 1881, and its Carnegie library opened in 1909. In 1998 it joined the townships of Ellice, Mornington, North Easthope and South Easthope to form Perth East.

The 2021 census counts about 830 homes in Milverton. About three in four are single detached houses and about one in seven are in apartment buildings under five storeys, with row houses about one in seventeen. About a third were built in 1960 or earlier and more than a quarter between 1961 and 1980. About one in five were built between 1981 and 2000, about one in sixteen between 2001 and 2015, and about one in eight between 2016 and 2021.

Perth Road 131 runs through Milverton, north toward Listowel, about 27 km away, and Perth Road 119 runs south to Stratford. Stratford City Hall is about 28 km away by road, a drive of about 24 minutes, and Kitchener City Hall about 48 km, a drive of about 43 minutes. The Perth East Recreation Complex at 40 Temperance Street has the arena, a banquet hall for up to 400 people, an auditorium and an outdoor pool. Beside it, PERC Park has a pavilion, a playground, a picnic area, a ball diamond, a half-size soccer pitch and a walking trail, the Bill Gies Pavilion has picnic tables and washrooms, and the All Wheels Park opened in 2023. Arand Field on Pierson Street is a ball diamond beside the Milverton Agricultural Society Hall. David Shearer Memorial Park, beside the township office at 25 Mill Street East, has a playground with firetruck swings, Greenwood Park on Cobalt Street has swings and an open pavilion, and Milverton Lions Square is at Main Street North and Fulton Street. Milverton Fair Day is usually held on the fourth weekend of September.

• St. Mary's School — JK to Grade 8. The Catholic elementary school, on Tremaine Avenue in Listowel, with French immersion from Senior Kindergarten.
• St. Michael Catholic Secondary School — Grades 9 to 12. The Catholic secondary school, on Oakdale Avenue in Stratford.
• Jeanne Sauvé Catholic School — JK to Grade 8. The Catholic French immersion school from JK, on Grange Street in Stratford.
