What it's like
Morriston is a small village in the south of Puslinch, just south of Highway 401 and close to Highway 6. Morriston Meadows Park, off Currie Drive, has a baseball diamond, a basketball court, a playground and a picnic pavilion, and the Old Morriston baseball diamond, lit for night games, is off Main Street. The Historic Corner Block, a small garden made by the Morriston Women's Institute, has the bell from the old Morriston School at its centre. Farm fields and woodlots surround the village, and Aberfoyle's library and recreation centre are a short drive north.
History
Before European settlement, a Neutral village of about 4,000 people stood in the Badenoch area near Morriston. Many of Puslinch's German settlers made their homes around Morriston in the 1800s. By 1857 the village had its own fire company, the Victoria Fire Company of the United Village of Morriston and Elgin, with a single fire wagon.
The homes
The census gives no figures for Morriston on its own, so these are the figures for the whole of Puslinch Township. The 2021 census counted about 2,950 homes in Puslinch. More than nine in ten are single detached houses. About one in five were built in 1960 or earlier and about one in five between 1961 and 1980. More than a quarter were built between 1981 and 2000, and about a third in 2001 or later.
Getting around
Highway 6 connects Morriston north to Highway 401 and Guelph and south toward Hamilton. Guelph City Hall is about 20 km away by road, a drive of about 19 minutes by Highway 401 and the Hanlon Expressway. Aberfoyle is a short drive north, and GO Transit's Aberfoyle Park and Ride is at Brock Road and McLean Road.
Parks and daily life
Morriston Meadows Park has a baseball diamond with stands and washrooms beside it, a basketball court, a playground and a picnic pavilion that can be rented for events. The Old Morriston baseball diamond has lights, stands and washrooms, and the Historic Corner Block garden is a quiet spot in the village. The Optimist Recreation Centre, the Puslinch Community Centre and the Puslinch branch of the Wellington County Library are in Aberfoyle. The Badenoch soccer pitch, with stands, is off Victoria Road South.
