Burgessville

Burgessville is a small village on Oxford Road 59, about halfway between Woodstock and Norwich, in the north of Norwich Township among the dairy farms of the old North Norwich Township. Ducky Dennis Park on Main Street South is the village park, and the Burgessville branch of the Oxford County Library is a few doors away.

Burgessville grew up in North Norwich Township, where Elias Snyder settled in about 1811; the village was first known as Snyder's Corners, and its first store opened in 1845. Apple growing began here in 1850. In 1975 North Norwich joined the Village of Norwich and the townships of East Oxford and South Norwich to form the Township of Norwich.

The census counts Burgessville with the farms around it, so these figures are estimates for the village. They come to about 140 homes, nearly all of them single detached houses. About four in ten were built in 1960 or earlier and about a quarter between 1961 and 1980. About one in five were built between 1981 and 2000, about one in seven between 2001 and 2015, and about one in ten between 2016 and 2021.

Oxford Road 59 runs through Burgessville, north to Woodstock City Hall, about 18 km away by road, a drive of about 19 minutes, and south to Norwich.

Ducky Dennis Park is at 625 Main Street South, and the Burgessville branch of the Oxford County Library is at 604 Main Street South. Norwich's arena, splash pad and museum are a short drive south, and Woodstock's are a short drive north.
