What it's like
Rural Zorra covers almost all of the township, about 52,700 hectares of rolling farmland, the largest countryside in Oxford. Harrington and Kintore are small villages among the farms, and Lakeside, Uniondale, Medina, Dickson's Corners, Braemar, Brooksdale, Banner, Golspie and Youngsville are hamlets. In Harrington, the Harrington Grist Mill has been restored as a working museum beside a pond, and Lakeside sits on Sunova Lake.
History
Zorra was settled from the 1830s by Scottish families, who grew to nearly a quarter of the county's people. The novelist Ralph Connor and the missionary George Leslie Mackay both came from Zorra. In 1975 East Nissouri, West Zorra and North Oxford townships joined to form the Township of Zorra, which had 8,628 people in 2021, up 6% since 2016.
The homes
The 2021 census counted 3,162 homes in Zorra. Leaving out Thamesford and Embro, the countryside, its villages and its hamlets had about 1,910 homes, more than nine in ten of them single detached houses. Nearly half were built in 1960 or earlier and about a quarter between 1961 and 1980. About one in six were built between 1981 and 2000, and about one in ten in 2001 or later.
Getting around
Highway 2 and Highway 401 cross the south of the township toward London and Woodstock, and Oxford Roads 6 and 17 link Embro and the north with Woodstock. Thamesford and Embro are a short drive from most of the countryside.
Parks and daily life
The Harrington Grist Mill is being restored by the Harrington Community Club as a working museum, and Harrington Hall, a former church beside the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority's pond, holds a branch of the Oxford County Library. Harrington Community Park on Road 96 has a lit ball diamond and a playground. Kintore has soccer fields, Lakeside sits on Sunova Lake, and the Thamesford pool and the arenas in Thamesford and Embro are close by.
