What it's like
Bright is a crossroads village where they've been crafting cheese since the 1870s, surrounded by some of Oxford's prettiest rolling farmland. The village sits on the old line between Blandford and Blenheim townships, north-east of Woodstock. Bright Ball Diamond and Park at 51 John Street East has a lit softball diamond, a skateboard park, a playground and a canteen.
History
Bright grew up on both sides of the line between Blandford and Blenheim, two of the townships Governor Simcoe named in the 1790s. The two townships joined in 1975 to form Blandford-Blenheim. The children's author Bill Swan was born in Bright.
The homes
The census counts Bright with the farms around it, so these figures are estimates for the village. They come to about 140 homes, about four in five of them single detached houses and about one in eight mobile homes. Nearly half were built in 1960 or earlier and about a quarter between 1961 and 1980. About one in five were built between 1981 and 2000, and about one in ten in 2001 or later.
Getting around
Oxford Roads 22 and 29 link Bright with Woodstock City Hall, about 24 km away by road, a drive of about 25 minutes. Plattsville is a short drive east.
