What it's like

A Nith River village of new homes and old farm roots, about half an hour by road from both Kitchener and Woodstock. Plattsville sits in the north of Blandford-Blenheim, close to the Waterloo Region line. Mill Street East is home to the Plattsville Memorial Community Arena and the village park beside it, with a ball diamond, a soccer pitch, two tennis and pickleball courts, a skatepark, a covered pavilion and a splash pad. The 1921 "To Our Heroes" memorial gate and the cenotaph stand on the same grounds.

History

Plattsville is named after Samuel Platt, who bought land on the Nith in Blenheim Township in the 1840s, built a grist mill, Blenheim Mills, and laid out the village by 1851. The river powered a flour mill, a woollen mill and a sawmill, and Plattsville became a police village in 1907. In 1975 Blenheim and Blandford townships joined to form the Township of Blandford-Blenheim. Hockey Hall of Fame member Babe Siebert was born in Plattsville.

The homes

The census counts Plattsville with some of the farms around it, so these figures are estimates for the village. They come to about 580 homes, more than four in five of them single detached houses, with semi-detached houses making up about one in twelve. About a quarter were built in 1960 or earlier and about one in eight between 1961 and 1980. Nearly a third were built between 1981 and 2000, about one in five between 2001 and 2015, and about one in ten between 2016 and 2021.

Getting around

Oxford Road 8 runs south from Plattsville toward Woodstock City Hall, about 31 km away by road, a drive of about 32 minutes. Kitchener City Hall is about 35 km away, a drive of about 31 minutes. Drumbo and Highway 401 are a short drive south.

Parks and daily life

The village park at 68 Mill Street East has a ball diamond, a soccer pitch with several fields, two tennis and pickleball courts, a playground, a covered pavilion, a skatepark and a splash pad, open June to September. The Plattsville Memorial Community Arena on the same grounds has a single ice pad with seating for 300 and a café, with free public skating on Sunday afternoons in season, and the Plattsville Lions Community Hall is in the same building.
