What it's like
A farm town on the Thames and the birthplace of hockey legend Howie Morenz. In Mitchell the arena, the fairgrounds, and the main street still set the weekly rhythm. Mitchell sits where Highway 8 meets Highway 23, and the Thames River runs through the middle of town. Mitchell Lions Park on Blenheim Street has two playgrounds, an accessible inclusive playground, an animal park and a splash pad, with the pool next door, and kayaks can be rented in summer at Blenheim and Blanshard streets. The West Perth Thames Nature Trail follows the river valley for more than 10 km, through the West Perth Wetlands and Centennial Park. Each year at the end of summer, the Mitchell and District Agricultural Society holds the Mitchell Fall Fair.
History
Mitchell is named for a settler who built a small shanty by the Thames. The Canada Company laid out the town plot on the Huron Road in 1836, William Hicks built the first log building in 1837, and a post office and a sawmill followed in 1842. Mitchell became a village in 1857, after the railway arrived, and a town in 1874, when it had about 2,000 people. Howie Morenz was born here and began his hockey career with the Mitchell Juveniles in 1917, before joining the Montreal Canadiens in 1923. On January 1, 1998, Mitchell joined the townships of Logan, Hibbert and Fullarton to form West Perth.
