What it's like
Rural Brant covers about 33,700 hectares of the County of Brant: the farmland north of Paris and Brantford out to the Waterloo Region and Hamilton lines, and the countryside west of Paris to the Oxford County line, as far south as Highway 53 and Burford. Burford is the largest village, and Glen Morris, Harrisburg, Falkland, Cathcart, Muir and Gobles are hamlets among the farms. Glen Morris sits beside the Grand River, and the Paris to Cambridge rail trail and the Grand Valley Trail follow the river north.
History
This countryside takes in parts of three old townships: South Dumfries, with St. George and Glen Morris; Burford, first surveyed in 1793 and settled by four families before 1800; and the northern concessions of Brantford Township. Burford, once called Claremont, grew up on the old trail from Burlington Bay to the Thames and was known as Oxford's gateway. The townships joined the Town of Paris on January 1, 1999, to form the County of Brant.
The homes
These figures are estimates for the countryside inside the approved edge, from the census areas shared out by the County's address points. They come to about 3,060 homes, nearly nine in ten of them single detached houses. About a third were built in 1960 or earlier and about a quarter between 1961 and 1980. About one in five were built between 1981 and 2000, and about one in six in 2001 or later.
Getting around
Highway 403 crosses the south of this area between Woodstock and Brantford, Highway 24 runs north through St. George to Cambridge, and Highway 53 runs west from Brantford through Burford. County roads link the farms and hamlets with Paris, St. George and Burford, and Brant Transit, the County's pre-booked shared-ride service, serves the whole County.
Parks and daily life
Burford has the Burford Community Centre with its arena, the Burford branch of the County of Brant Public Library on Park Avenue, two paved trails, Lions Way and Art Cadman, and the Burford Fall Fair, held each Thanksgiving weekend since 1893 at the Burford fairgrounds. Glen Morris Centennial Hall is on Dunbar Street, and the County's cycling loops from Paris and St. George run through Falkland and Glen Morris.
