Paris: Paris, where the Nith meets the Grand.
Just over the county line in Brant, Paris has been called one of the prettiest little towns in Canada: cobblestone buildings, a downtown at the meeting of the Grand and Nith rivers, and main-street charm that draws visitors from everywhere.

The cobblestone buildings
Levi Boughton brought cobblestone building to Paris with St. James Church in 1839, laying stones taken from the rivers. Two churches and ten houses built this way are still in use, including Hamilton Place, and the County calls Paris the "Cobblestone Capital of Canada".
The first long-distance call
Two years after the telephone was invented in Brantford, the first long-distance call was made between Brantford and Paris, on August 3, 1876.
Penman's Dam
The textile maker John Penman built the dam on the Grand River in 1918. Today it is lit each evening, through a partnership with the Paris Firefighter's Club.
Downtown, the rivers and the newer streets.
Paris grew where the Nith River meets the Grand, with downtown at the meeting of the two rivers and newer streets beyond.
Downtown Paris
Downtown Paris sits where the two rivers meet, with the Old Town Hall, the Arlington Hotel and the Paris branch library in its Carnegie building on William Street. The County's Downtown Paris Master Plan is guiding work on its streets.
Along the Nith
The paved Nith River Trail follows the Nith through town, and the Wilkin Family Community Centre and the lawn bowling club are on Grand River Street North.
The newer streets
About a third of the homes in Paris were built in 2001 or later, and about one in seven between 2016 and 2021.
Trails, rivers and the fair.
The rail trail to Cambridge
The Paris to Cambridge trail follows the old rail line north along the Grand on fine crushed gravel, part of the County's 70 km of trails.
Trails in town
The Nith River Trail, the Barker's Bush trails and Watt's Pond Trail are all inside Paris, and County cycling loops run out to Falkland, Glen Morris and Ayr.
Sports and recreation
The Brant Sports Complex and the Syl Apps Community Centre, with its indoor turf, are the town's main recreation centres.
The Paris Fall Fair
The fair runs over Labour Day weekend, with rural exhibits, a midway, a demolition derby and country music nights.

History
Hiram Capron of Vermont bought land at the Forks of the Grand in 1829 and settled the town that year. It was named for the gypsum found nearby in 1793, used to make plaster of Paris. Paris became a village in 1850 and a town in 1856, and in 1999 it joined the townships around it to form the County of Brant.
The homes
The census counts Paris in many small areas, so these figures are estimates for the County's Paris settlement line. They come to about 6,000 homes, about two in three of them single detached houses, with semi-detached houses making up about one in seven, row houses about one in nine and apartments about one in eight. Nearly a third were built in 1960 or earlier and about one in six between 1961 and 1980. About one in six were built between 1981 and 2000, about one in five between 2001 and 2015, and about one in seven between 2016 and 2021.
Getting around
Highway 403 runs along the south of Paris, between Woodstock and Brantford. Brantford City Hall is about 13 km away by road, a drive of about 18 minutes, and Cambridge City Hall about 21 km, a drive of about 22 minutes. Brant Transit, the County's pre-booked shared-ride service, serves Paris, and the Paris to Cambridge rail trail is open for walking and cycling.
