St. George

St. George is a village in the north-east of the County of Brant, between Paris, Brantford and Cambridge. The County calls it "Canada's Friendliest Town", and its downtown has restaurants, coffee shops and the antique stores along Main Street. The Apple Harvest Festival fills the village on the third weekend of September, and the St. George Ravens junior hockey team plays at the South Dumfries Community Centre.

St. George grew up in the old South Dumfries Township, with Paris and Glen Morris. Sunnyside, a Victorian mansion in the village, was the South Dumfries township office. Adelaide Hunter Hoodless, a founder of the Women's Institute, was born in 1858 at The Willows, her family's farmhouse near St. George. In 1999 South Dumfries joined Paris and the other Brant townships to form the County of Brant.

The census counts St. George with some of the land around it, so these figures are estimates for the County's St. George settlement line. They come to about 1,440 homes, about nine in ten of them single detached houses. About one in six were built in 1960 or earlier and about one in eight between 1961 and 1980. About four in ten were built between 1981 and 2000, about a quarter between 2001 and 2015, and a few between 2016 and 2021.

Highway 24 runs north from St. George to Cambridge City Hall, about 17 km away by road, a drive of about 17 minutes, and Brantford City Hall is about 14 km south, a drive of about 18 minutes. Paris is a short drive west, and Brant Transit, the County's pre-booked shared-ride service, serves the village.

Jacob's Woods has walking and cycling trails in the village, and the County's St. George and Glen Morris cycling loop runs 30 km through the countryside. The St. George Lawn Bowling Club is on Thompson Street, the St. George branch of the County of Brant Public Library is at 78 Main Street, and the South Dumfries Community Centre is home to the Ravens.
