Avon Ward, Stratford

One of Stratford's oldest quarters wears its age like a well-kept garden, verandas and gables along Avondale and Hibernia, on streets that have grown old gracefully under their trees. Downtown is an easy stroll, and always has been.

The 2021 census counts about 3,600 homes in Avon Ward. About six in ten are single detached houses, and just under a quarter are apartments in buildings under five storeys. About a third were built in 1960 or earlier, about a quarter between 1961 and 1980, and about one in ten between 2016 and 2021.

Stratford Transit's 1 Huron, 3 McCarthy and 5 Devon routes serve Avon Ward. The transit terminal downtown is about 1.9 km away. Huron Street (Highway 8), Mornington Street, O'Loane Avenue and McCarthy Road West are the main streets.

The Stratford Rotary Complex and the ball diamonds of the Stratford Education and Recreation Centre are in the north of the ward. Battershall Park is the largest neighbourhood park, at about 4 hectares, and Greenwood Park, Avalon Park, Glastonbury Circle and the Matilda and Douglas Street Playground add more. The T.J. Dolan Parkland is in the ward too, and the Stratford Lions Pool is about 1 km away.

• Avon Public School — JK to Grade 6. The public school for the western streets, including Avondale Avenue, Matilda Street and O'Loane Avenue.
• Bedford Public School — JK to Grade 6. The public school for the eastern streets, including Mornington Street, Duke Street and Greenwood Drive, with French immersion from Grade 1.
• Stratford Intermediate School — Grades 7 and 8. The public middle school, on St. Andrew Street, with French immersion.
• Stratford District Secondary School — Grades 9 to 12. The public secondary school, on Forman Avenue, with French immersion.
• Anne Hathaway Public School — Grades 1 to 6 in French immersion. The public French immersion school for the Avon Public School streets.
• St. Aloysius Catholic School — JK to Grade 8. The Catholic elementary school for most of Avon Ward.
• St. Joseph's Catholic School — JK to Grade 8. The Catholic elementary school for the southern streets near the river, including Avondale Avenue.
• Jeanne Sauvé Catholic School — JK to Grade 8. The Catholic French immersion school, on Grange Street, with immersion from Junior Kindergarten.
• St. Michael Catholic Secondary School — Grades 9 to 12. The Catholic secondary school, on Oakdale Avenue.
