Civic Centre, Kitchener
Heritage quarter of grand older homes and mature streets beside downtown.
What it's like
On a concert night in Civic Centre, people stroll from their front doors along Queen Street North to Centre In The Square, where the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery shares the building. By day the streets are quiet, lined with historic houses protected as part of a Heritage Conservation District, such as the Sonneck House of 1874. In summer, the garden of the old Governor's House and Gaol is in bloom. The Central Library is a two-minute walk, and downtown is just beyond.
The homes
The City's 2021 estimates count about 1,200 homes in the Civic Centre planning community. Apartment buildings of five storeys or more make up about three in five. Apartment buildings under five storeys make up about one in five, and single detached houses about one in eight. In the 2021 census, about three in five homes in the surrounding area were built in 1960 or earlier, and about a quarter between 1961 and 1980. Exterior changes to many properties follow the heritage district plan.
Getting around
Kitchener City Hall ION station is about 0.5 km away, and Frederick station is about 0.6 km away. Downtown Kitchener is within walking distance. The Conestoga Parkway has an interchange at Victoria Street and Frederick Street.
