What it's like

King East sits between the Kitchener Market and the Aud, and you can feel both on a Saturday. In the morning, people walk west along King Street East with empty bags and come back with them full from the Market. On game nights, crowds stream along East Avenue toward the Aud. Between the two, the light rail glides into Borden station, and older homes and small greens such as Madison Green and Stabler Green sit along the side streets. The St. Peter's Lutheran and First Mennonite Church cemeteries add quiet, tree-shaded green space close to King Street.

The homes

The City's 2021 estimates count about 980 homes in the King East planning community. Single detached houses make up nearly two in five, and apartment buildings under five storeys about a third. Taller apartment buildings and duplexes each make up about one in nine. In the 2021 census, about three in five homes in the surrounding area were built in 1960 or earlier, and about a fifth between 1961 and 1980. The Berlin and Waterloo Street Railway car barn and power house at 25 Madison Avenue North dates from 1902.

Getting around

Borden ION station is about 0.2 km from the centre of the community, and Kitchener Market station about 0.8 km. Grand River Transit's 7 King and 8 Weber routes run nearby. The Iron Horse Trail and the Schneider Creek greenways are close by. The Kitchener Market, at 300 King Street East, is about 0.8 km away.

Parks and daily life

The Kitchener Memorial Auditorium, with its arenas and Jack Couch Stadium, is about 0.6 km away, and its leash-free dog park about 1 km. Madison Green, Stabler Green and Luther Green are small greens in the community. Kaufman Park, with its toboggan hill, is close by. Cameron Heights Collegiate Institute, with an indoor pool, is about 0.5 to 0.6 km away. The Rockway Centre is about 0.8 km away, and Rockway Gardens about 0.9 km. The City-owned Rockway Golf Course is about 1.1 km away. The Central Library and Centre In The Square are each about 1.3 km away. The King East Neighbourhood Association formed in 2026.
