Waverley, Guelph

Mid-century homes beneath a canopy that took sixty years to grow: settled, unhurried streets north of the river where the biggest event of the season is the leaves turning. Around Riverside Park, the city's beloved playground is the backyard here: the miniature train, the riverbank lawns, the whole summer-afternoon institution, with quiet streets radiating out from it.

The 2021 census counted about 5,100 homes in Waverley. More than half are single detached houses, about one in five are in apartment buildings of five storeys or more, and about one in seven in smaller apartment buildings. About a third of the homes were built in 1960 or earlier, and about four in ten between 1961 and 1980.

Guelph Transit's 12 Delhi, 17 Woodlawn Watson, 18 Watson Woodlawn and 99 Mainline routes serve the neighbourhood, with the 99 Mainline running along Woolwich Street to downtown. Guelph Central Station is about 2.8 km away. Woolwich Street, Speedvale Avenue, Victoria Road North, Woodlawn Road and Stevenson Street North are the main streets.

Riverside Park, at 709 Woolwich Street, covers about 32 hectares along the Speed River, with a playground, ball diamonds, a disc golf course and a cricket pitch. Waverley Drive Park has a playground, a soccer field and a splash pad, and Skov Park has a playground, tennis courts and a community garden. Wilson Farm Park, Bullfrog Pond Park and Golfview Park have playgrounds. The Bullfrog Mall branch of the Guelph Public Library is in the neighbourhood.

• Holy Rosary Catholic School — JK to Grade 8. The Catholic elementary school, in the neighbourhood on Stevenson Street North.
• St. James Catholic High School — Grades 9 to 12. The Catholic secondary school, on Victoria Road North.
