What it's like
Briardean lies on the north-west side of the Speed River, where established streets off Briardean Road and Hunt Club Road meet some of the city's newest homes. The Speed River Valley Lands and the Hunt Club Natural Area spread nearly fifty hectares of woods and meadows along the river. On early mornings, mist lifts off the valley as walkers set out along the Mill Run Trail. Compass Trail Park and Equestrian Way Park have playgrounds close to home. Riverside Park and the village of Hespeler are both a short drive away.
The homes
The 2021 census counts Briardean together with parts of Silverheights and Blackbridge, and together they had about 1,750 homes. Just over half are single detached houses, and row houses make up more than a quarter. About three in ten homes were built between 2016 and 2021, about one in five between 1961 and 1980 and about a quarter between 1981 and 2000. A public elementary school is planned for the neighbourhood.
Getting around
Grand River Transit's 51 Hespeler and 62 Speedsville routes and the 203 Maple Grove route serve the area. The Pinebush stop on the 302 ION Bus, which runs to Fairway ION station in Kitchener, is about 2.5 km away. Stage 2 ION, which the Region has approved and is now designing, plans a Pinebush station about 2.7 km away. Briardean Road and Hunt Club Road are the main streets, and Highway 401 runs along the south side. The Mill Run Trail follows the river.
Parks and daily life
The Speed River Valley Lands cover about 34 hectares and the Hunt Club Natural Area about 14 hectares. Compass Trail Park, about 5 hectares, and Equestrian Way Park, at 144 Ridge Road, have playgrounds. The Mill Run Trail runs between the Chilligo Conservation Area and Riverside Park. Riverside Park is about 2.5 km away, and the Hespeler branch of the Cambridge Public Library about 2.7 km.
