Southwood, Cambridge

Southwood is a settled neighbourhood of curving streets in West Galt. On autumn Friday nights, the lights over the track and field at Southwood Secondary School shine across the rooftops. Willard Park, on Beechwood Road, has a playground and shady paths, and in winter Angewood Park floods an outdoor rink for neighbourhood skating. Southwood Drive and White Oak Drive are lined with mature trees that turn gold in October. Downtown Galt is about two kilometres away.

The 2021 census counted about 1,800 homes in Southwood. About half are single detached houses, and apartment buildings under five storeys make up about three in ten. Row houses make up about one in eight. About half the homes were built between 1961 and 1980, about one in five between 1981 and 1990, and about one in seven between 1991 and 2000.

Grand River Transit's 55 Grand Ridge route and the 206 Coronation iXpress serve the neighbourhood. Ainslie Street Terminal, with the 302 ION Bus to Fairway ION station in Kitchener, is about 2.2 km away. The planned Cambridge Terminus station on Stage 2 ION, which the Region has approved and is now designing, is about 2.4 km away. Southwood Drive and Dumfries Road are the main streets.

Willard Park, at 85 Beechwood Road, covers about 3 hectares and has a playground. Angewood Park, at 120 Angela Crescent, has a playground and an outdoor rink, and Byton Lane Park has a playground. Twin Cedars Park adds green space. The neighbourhood's sports facilities include a track, a field hockey pitch, four tennis courts, soccer fields and ball diamonds. Southwood Secondary School, at 30 Southwood Drive, and St. Gregory Catholic School, on Osborne Street, are in the neighbourhood. The Queen's Square branch of the Cambridge Public Library is about 2.1 km away.
