What it's like

Downtown Galt holds a beautiful collection of nineteenth-century stone and brick buildings on both banks of the Grand River. The Old Post Office rises from the water's edge in grey Guelph limestone, with a steep mansard roof, round-arched windows and a clock tower. Thomas Fuller designed it, it was built between 1884 and 1887, and it is now a National Historic Site and a branch of the Cambridge Public Library. Across the river, the Gothic Revival spire of Central Presbyterian Church, completed in 1882, rises 56 metres above the trees, and its bells ring out over the water. Along Main Street and Water Street, old stone and brick storefronts with tall windows and carved trim line the sidewalks. On Saturday mornings, the Cambridge Farmers' Market fills its 1887 market hall on Dickson Street with the smell of fresh bread and coffee. On summer evenings, music drifts along the riverbank from Mill Race Park, and after dark the lit stone buildings are reflected in the river.

The homes

The 2021 census counted about 1,950 homes in Downtown Galt. About two in five are in apartment buildings under five storeys, and about three in ten are in buildings of five storeys or more. Single detached houses make up about one in ten. About two in five homes were built in 1960 or earlier, and about one in six between 1961 and 1980. More than a quarter were built after 2001.

Getting around

Ainslie Street Terminal, in the core, is the hub for Grand River Transit in Galt. The 302 ION Bus runs from here to Fairway ION station in Kitchener, along with the 206 Coronation iXpress and the 50, 51, 53, 55, 57, 58 and 63 routes. Stage 2 of ION, approved by Regional Council in November 2025, will bring light rail 17 km from Fairway station to Downtown Cambridge. The Region says the project is now in detailed design and pre-construction, and it is still seeking full funding. The planned Cambridge Terminus station is about 0.3 km from the centre of the neighbourhood. Hespeler Road leads north to Highway 401. The Living Levee Trail follows the river through the core.

Parks and daily life

Mill Race Park sits on the river's east bank in the core, and the Sculpture Gardens and Founders Point are close by. Dickson Park, at 30 Park Hill Road West, covers about 5 hectares, with ball diamonds, a soccer field and the Dickson Centre's indoor rink. Absaloms Walk and Dan Spring Way are short walking paths. The Queen's Square branch of the Cambridge Public Library is at 1 North Square, and the Old Post Office branch is at 12 Water Street South. Churchill Park is about 1.8 km away.
