Rural North Cambridge, Cambridge

Rural North Cambridge is the farmland and river country in the City of Cambridge north of Highway 401, between the Grand River on the west and the Speed River on the east. Riverbank Drive follows the Grand River north past fields and wooded banks, and Maple Grove Road crosses the countryside from the Grand toward Hespeler. Homes here stand on country lots along these roads and on the quiet streets of the Brenda Street area. Fields of corn and grain stretch between the two river valleys, with woodlots and wetlands along the creeks. The Maple Grove Dog Park gives dogs room to run, and the shops and services of Hespeler and Preston are close by.

This land was part of Waterloo Township, settled from the early 1800s by Mennonite settlers from Pennsylvania. In 1973 it became part of the new City of Cambridge. Highway 401 now runs along its southern edge, and business parks have grown up beside the highway on Maple Grove Road.

The census does not count this countryside on its own. Its western part, along the Grand River, with Riverbank Drive, Maple Grove Road and the Brenda Street area, is counted in one area that reaches a little past it to the south. In 2021 that area had about 175 homes, about six in seven of them single detached houses. About four in ten were built in 1960 or earlier and about three in ten between 1961 and 1980. The eastern part, near the Speed River, is counted together with streets in Briardean, Silverheights and Hespeler, so it has no figures of its own.

Highway 401 runs along the south side, with interchanges at Fountain Street (exit 275), Highway 8 (exit 278) and Hespeler Road (exit 282). Fountain Street leads north to Breslau and the Region of Waterloo International Airport, and Riverbank Drive follows the Grand River toward Preston. Grand River Transit's 203 Maple Grove route serves Maple Grove Road, and the 78 Fountain route runs along Fountain Street. Downtown Kitchener is about 11 km away in a straight line.

The Maple Grove Dog Park is on Maple Grove Road. The Grand River runs along the west side of the countryside and the Speed River along the east. Hespeler Village, with its library branch, Mill Pond and shops, and Preston's Riverside Park are a short drive away.

• Jacob Hespeler Secondary School — Grades 9 to 12. The public secondary school for the north-east, near the Speed River.
• St. Gabriel Catholic School — JK to Grade 8. A Catholic elementary school in Hespeler.
• St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School — Grades 9 to 12. The nearest Catholic secondary school, about 8 km from the Brenda Street area.
