What it's like
Uptown Waterloo gathers along King Street, where ION trains glide past the Waterloo Public Square stop and café tables line the sidewalks on warm afternoons. In winter, skaters circle the rink on the Public Square under the lights of the shops around it. A few minutes west, the paths of Waterloo Park lead along the shore of Silver Lake, past the Perimeter Institute and the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery. South of Erb Street, the old Seagram distillery buildings, in use from 1857 to 1992, now hold lofts and the Centre for International Governance Innovation.
The homes
Uptown Waterloo forms part of the City's Central planning district. The City's 2021 census profile counts about 6,100 homes in that district. About half are in apartment buildings of five storeys or more, about one in five in apartment buildings under five storeys, and about one in five are single detached houses. In the 2021 census, about half the homes in the surrounding area were built after 2001, including about a quarter between 2016 and 2021. About a quarter were built in 1960 or earlier. Several former Seagram Distillery buildings have been converted into condominiums.
Getting around
Waterloo Public Square ION station is at the centre of Uptown, and Willis Way station is about 0.2 km south. Grand River Transit's 5 Erb, 7 King and 16 Strasburg-Belmont routes run through the core. The Iron Horse Trail runs from Uptown to Kitchener, and the Laurel Trail crosses Waterloo Park.
Parks and daily life
Waterloo Park, the city's oldest park, opened in 1893 and covers about 45 hectares. It has sports fields, a cricket pitch, playgrounds, a splash pad, the Eby Farmstead and the region's oldest log schoolhouse, built in 1820. The Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex, with an arena, an indoor pool and an indoor track, is on Father David Bauer Drive. The Main Library is at 35 Albert Street, and Waterloo Town Square is about 0.2 km away. Heritage Green, at King and William streets, was the town's first farmers' market, created in 1855.
