What it's like
Northdale sits between Waterloo's two universities, and its streets hum with footsteps and bicycles from morning until late in the evening. To the west, the University of Waterloo's Ring Road loops past modern campus buildings and open lawns. At Veterans' Green on University Avenue West, a parkette honours the veterans of the Second World War beside rows of wartime townhouses. Newer residential towers rise along the streets, and at night their windows light the skyline. Waterloo Park is a short walk south.
The homes
Northdale forms part of the City's Columbia planning district. The City's 2021 census profile counts about 6,400 homes in that district. More than three in five are in apartment buildings of five storeys or more, and about one in five in apartment buildings under five storeys. Row houses and single detached houses make up most of the rest. In the 2021 census, more than eight in ten homes in the surrounding area were built after 2001, including about half between 2016 and 2021.
