Westmount, Waterloo

Westmount was assembled in the first half of the 20th century by industrialist Talmon Rieder and others, with streets inspired by the City Beautiful movement. Today its curving streets are wide and green, and deep front lawns roll down to the sidewalk under tall trees. To the south, the fairways of the Westmount Golf and Country Club, laid out by Stanley Thompson in 1929 and 1930, stretch across the city line. Peter Roos Park, on Westmount Road South, is a quiet corner for an evening walk.

The City's 2021 census profile counts about 1,800 homes in the Westmount planning district. Just under half are single detached houses. Apartment buildings of five storeys or more make up just over a third, and apartment buildings under five storeys about one in ten. In the 2021 census, about two in five homes in the surrounding area were built in 1960 or earlier, about a third between 1961 and 1980, and about one in ten between 1981 and 1990.

Grand River Transit's 5 Erb and 12 Westmount routes run nearby, along with the 202 University iXpress. Willis Way ION station is about 1.4 km away, and Waterloo Public Square station about 1.5 km. Westmount Road and Erb Street West cross at the neighbourhood's north edge. Westmount Place is about 0.7 km away.

Peter Roos Park, at 121 Westmount Road South, is a small green, and Westmount Corners and Alexandra Green sit at 73 Westmount Road South. The Westmount Golf and Country Club, a 64-hectare private course that spans Waterloo and Kitchener, is about 0.4 km away. Westmount Place's shops are about 0.7 km away. The Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex is about 1.1 km away, and Waterloo Park about 1.5 km. Empire Public School is in the neighbourhood, and Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School is about 0.7 km away.
