Uptown West, Waterloo

Step a block west of King Street and Uptown West settles into quiet, tree-shaded residential streets. At Alexandra Park on Alexandra Avenue, a small playground sits among the houses. On a fine morning, cyclists and dog walkers set off along the Iron Horse Trail toward Kitchener. The Menno Euclid streets, north of William Street West, grew up around Waterloo's early factories. Uptown's cafés, the Public Square and the ION line are all a few minutes' walk away.

Uptown West forms part of the City's Central planning district. The City's 2021 census profile counts about 6,100 homes in that district. About half are in apartment buildings of five storeys or more, about one in five in apartment buildings under five storeys, and about one in five are single detached houses. In the 2021 census, about two in five homes in the surrounding area were built in 1960 or earlier, about a third between 1961 and 1980, and about one in ten between 1981 and 1990.

Willis Way ION station is about 0.5 km away, and Allen station about 0.7 km. Grand River Transit's 5 Erb, 7 King, 12 Westmount and 16 Strasburg-Belmont routes run nearby. The Iron Horse Trail starts in the neighbourhood and runs to Kitchener. Waterloo Town Square is about 0.6 km away, and Westmount Place about 0.9 km.

Alexandra Park, at 47 Alexandra Avenue, has a playground. Labatts Parkette is on Park Street. The Iron Horse Trail follows a former Canadian Pacific Railway line and forms part of the Trans Canada Trail. The Uptown Public Square is about 0.7 km away. Waterloo Park and Silver Lake are about 0.8 km away, as is the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex. The Main Library is about 0.8 km away. The Westmount Golf and Country Club is about 1.3 km away. The Uptown West Neighbourhood Association serves the area.
