What it's like

Erbsville began as a village after 1835, settled by immigrants who were not part of the area's Mennonite community. Along Erbsville Road, mid-19th-century houses still stand among the trees, and the fields beyond them run west toward the city limit. The Erbsville School grounds at 719 Erbsville Road keep an open playing field at the heart of the old village. Nearby, the trails of Erbsville Park and the Riener Woodlot wander through more than 14 hectares of hushed, green woods.

The homes

Erbsville forms part of the City's Conservation planning district, which also takes in Conservation Meadows and Beaver Creek Meadows. The City's 2021 census profile counts about 1,050 homes in that district. About seven in ten are single detached houses. Row houses and semi-detached houses each make up about one in ten, and other dwelling types most of the rest. In the 2021 census, nearly nine in ten homes in the surrounding area, which takes in the newer streets to the east, were built after 2001. The village's mid-19th-century residences form part of the City's Erbsville cultural heritage landscape.

Getting around

Grand River Transit's 13 Laurelwood route runs within about 1.5 km. Research and Technology ION station is about 4.8 km away. Erbsville Road, Laurelwood Drive and Conservation Drive are the main roads. The John M. Harper Branch of the Waterloo Public Library is about 2.8 km away.

Parks and daily life

The Erbsville School grounds, a culturally significant City park at 719 Erbsville Road, cover about 2 hectares and have a playing field. Erbsville Park, at 750 Schnarr Street, and the Riener Woodlot, at 718 Wideman Road, are natural areas of about 7 hectares each. The Forested Hills are about 2.0 km away, Laurelwood Park about 2.7 km and Laurel Creek Conservation Area about 3.1 km. The City lists Erbsville as a cultural heritage landscape for its 19th-century houses and natural heritage features.
