What it's like
Beechwood's curving streets dip and climb past mature trees and tidy gardens. Clair Lake Park, more than nine hectares on Craigleith Drive, opens into woods, with a playground at its edge. On McDougall Road, some of the houses began life as summer cottages, and the hilly street still has a country feel. In Keats Way Woods, sunlight filters through the leaves onto the path on a summer afternoon. The University of Waterloo campus is a short walk north.
The homes
The City's 2021 census profile counts about 3,500 homes in the Beechwood planning district, which also takes in Maple Hills south of Erb Street West. About half are single detached houses. Row houses make up about one in seven, and apartment buildings of five storeys or more and under five storeys about one in eight each. In the 2021 census, about two in three homes in the surrounding area were built between 1961 and 1980, and about one in six between 1981 and 1990.
